Hands Down my Favorite Book of 2024

"Holy. Cow. I have just finished the third installment of the Artefacts of Ouranos and when I say, "There are few words" I mean it. I have fallen in love with Nisha J. Tuli, her writing style and truly awesome characters from essentially the first word I've read. Discovering Lor in the Trial of the Sun Queen was an absolute delight and has stuck with me. This third installment is full of all the things I love about series that put forward strong character development, plot twists that grip your heart and real moments/choices/sacrifices that burn you to the bone. Tuli has poured her heart and soul into this world and cast and it shows. Every chapter answered questions, allowed the audience to breathe and process before presenting more questions and twists. Tuli's blend of traditional fantasy elements and tropes combined with fresh ideas, betrayals, declarations of love and lore from distant and ancient cultures makes a truly lasting impression. I do not want this series to end. I do not want to go without these wonderful characters. Already firmly a "auto-buy author" and a "regular reread" for a series, it will be difficult to review this book as there is so much that happens and I want to avoid spoilers at all costs. Know this: Lor's journey continues to unfold, her true depth of strength and character revealed and her bonds with her family, love and friends tested. She continues to come to terms with her trauma, pain, vengeance but also accepts her past and looks toward the future with more optimism and hope. The love she shares with her family and Nadir is beautiful and had made me smile with tears brimming many times because Lor absolutely deserves this. The uphill battle against Atlas, Rion and the ticking clock for Ouranos challenge Lor at every turn but with her rag-tag team and her determination to right the wrongs of the past but also find closure for her own past, she is destined for success although the threat of heartache and ruin is always a risk. Hands down my favorite book of 2024. ["

This was recommended to me by a friend, and it was soo good and I'm so glad I read (listened to) this! The characters were so well developed, and so funny, which is a huge plus for me in a book! The world building and pacing of the book were also really strong and all I wanted to do was keep reading. The trials to "win" the Sun King were very unique and really brought the whole story together. The plot twists were twisty and the villians were unexpected, but all the elements worked so well together to make this book what it was. Lor was the perfect FMC, and she played her role in this book so well. She's so resilient and determined, especially when it comes to her family. Atlas was also a great MMC, he fit being a king to a TEE. Then we have Nadir, who we get bits of pieces from but I cannot wait to see what happens in the following books. "This was such a great story. Unfortunately, the author made huge mistakes in this book. Spoilers Queen Cerce: She was never a Queen. The continent knew her as Primary and Princess of Heart There was only one witness to what she did, Cloris. While Cloris could have spread the rumors, she claims she was hiding. It doesn’t make sense that the story became a universal truth without witnesses. In her last moments she gave birth to Lor’s mother and witnessed her become Primary. Cerce believes this means she is Queen and steals her mother’s crown (which is missing a piece, and is essentially broken). This is supposed to be the act that triggers fifty years of lost power for everyone on the continent. However, she didn’t actually steal the power. Cloris claims that the Primary power leaves her and goes to Lor’s mother, leaving Deadra as Queen. So…no stolen power. Cerce then goes on to bind herself to Wolf. We’ve been told that the destruction in Heart is the consequence of this action of binding two Primaries together without the proper changes to the ceremony. How can this be a problem if she is no longer the Primary and her mother is still the queen? The whole background of Heart’s destruction falls apart. The Staff also shows Lor a vision of what went down in those final minutes. This story jives with Cloris’ version. So there is no way out for the author there. Tyr: The true Sun King is held prisoner by Atlas. The Warders are kept in check by Atlas forcing his cooperation in binding them through the torture of his lover, Gabriel. This is supposed to have broken him and made him do whatever Atlas tells him. This is completely unbelievable. Atlas tortures Gabriel to make Tyr order the Warders under his control. Why wouldn’t Tyr just tell them to free him and kill/capture Atlas? Atlas has no offensive power, is not even the Primary, and is easily subdued by the Warders at the end. There are several more smaller inconsistencies, but it just ruins it. I gave this three stars because I am holding out hope that the author finds some way to fix these mistakes in the fourth book. She is very creative and good be great. ["

"Spice level: 2 Kinda Spoilers everywhere, I hid them though. It's a fun, easy, decent read. Tropes in this one similar to first and second book. More POVs, including the flashbacks though... I do think the character development is always on point! History and world building were good BUT read below for more on the history part. I have similar complaints from the second book in this one too. The flashback POV interruptions just aren't doing it for me, and book two and three flashbacks could have been condensed, and saved for ONE reveal point in the story, make them a big reveal from the priestess, at ONE time or something. It's just so janky and jarring when the flashbacks happen and at first, I was like who in the world is even talking, what's happening? Oh, and the addition of the Gods ABOVE Lor's world's Gods... I didn't like that quite so much. It gave weird Asteri vibes but not as mean and not as well done... starting to feel more and more similar to ACOTAR and CC from SJM. Maybe we'll get more info on them next book??? Lor reminds me a lot of Bryce right now. I know this whole paragraph sounds harsh and I don't mean it to be so bad, I'm terrible with words. I hate flashbacks in any book when they are jarring and not well placed. I like them better as hints and imagery rather than blatantly telling us, like quips here and there, or stereotypes and attitudes presented by characters. If that makes sense. I honestly think book 2 and 3 could have been combined/condensed and it would have been 100% a 5-star read for me. The group also does the whole we're supposed to be hiding but we're in plain sight thing in this one and I'm just like okay no one recognizes you??? I guess the priestess does but meh she's minor. Okay ma'am this one is going to be harsh... I HATE the 'lighting bug' pet name... I think I liked inmate better (and I didn't like that one either LOL). I missed the angst in this one lol! Despite all that, I am glad to see Lor and Nadir come together and the scene at her birthday party was so CUTE (minus the lightning bug name)! MA'AM THAT CLIFFHANGER ENDING I CAN'T WAIT FOR NOVEMBER I'M SCREAMING AND I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT IT FOR DAYS! I'M SO ANGRY LOL I've been going over all the details trying to decide if it was really him or someone else plus what happened to him excuse me?! I really think it was Nadir's sister, or Tristan or literally anyone else who betrayed Lor. NOT NADIR, not my man! Also, Atlas getting what he deserves and Gabriel getting free to be with Tyr! HELL YES! I can't wait for November for the conclusion! All that being said I really did enjoy this book but it's still not quite a 5-star read. ["
