"📖 Blood & Steel by Helen Scheuerer Rating: 4.25/5 Stars This book is objectively fantastic, a masterclass in world-building and tension, yet it left me pondering the elusive nature of true emotional connection. I know a lot of readers who love the same books I do absolutely adore this series, and honestly, I completely get why. On paper, *Blood & Steel* should’ve been a slam dunk for me. The world-building is incredibly rich, the tension is palpable, and the romantic stakes are undeniably high. This book delivered exactly what I look for in fantasy, a compelling exploration of a woman challenging her predetermined destiny through intense warrior training and personal growth. Althea Zoltaire's journey is a testament to unwavering spirit. In a world where women are forbidden to wield blades, she defies tradition, training in secret to become a warrior. With a looming prophecy of her death in three years, Althea must navigate perilous trials and a growing attraction to her chaperone, Wilder Hawthorne, all while facing an impending darkness. Her relentless pursuit of her destiny, pushing her body and mind to their limits, truly resonated with me on an intellectual level. As the author so aptly puts it, “No woman is responsible for the weak acts of a man who’s had his masculinity so easily threatened,” and Althea embodies this defiance. Her story speaks to a broad societal experience related to the expectations of women, and I admired her strength and determination. It’s clear that for Althea, “It doesn’t matter who stands against you… What matters most is who stands with you,” a sentiment that drives her forward. The quality here is undeniable. It’s well-written, well-paced, and easy to get swept up in. I was interested, but for some reason, I just wasn’t *invested*. The characters, like Althea and Wilder, were strong, but I never truly felt them on that visceral level, the kind where you’re holding your breath, aching for them to win or break or fall in love. It was more admiration than attachment for me. There wasn’t a specific flaw or misstep, it just didn’t click on that deeper emotional level. And I’ve learned something about myself: if I’m not emotionally wrecked or deeply tied to the arc of a character by book two, I lose momentum. That said, I can completely understand why other readers are obsessed. If you love fierce female protagonists defying societal norms and training intensively, with high-stakes personal challenges and a touch of enemies-to-lovers romance, this book is absolutely for you. It has all the ingredients for a truly captivating fantasy adventure. 📦 What to Expect ✨ Epic Fantasy 💖 Slow Burn Romance 🔥 Grumpy/Sunshine Dynamic 🤯 Complex Politics & Power Struggles 💔 Deep Emotional Growth 🦴 Magical Beasts or Sentient Magic ⚔️ A Lead Who Fights for More Than Survival 📚 Book Tags Keywords: Dark Fantasy, Magic, Romance, Political Intrigue, Found Family, Survival, War Tropes: Grumpy/Sunshine, Enemies to Reluctant Allies, Found Family, Mentor/Protegé, Slow Burn, Power Couple Triggers: Slavery, Violence, War Themes, Grooming (discussed), Sexual Assault (mentioned, not shown), Emotional Abuse, PTSD 🎯 Final Thoughts If you're looking for a high-quality fantasy with a fierce heroine and compelling world-building, *Blood & Steel* delivers. And I’d wager even more so with steel in your hand and the blood of your enemies splattered across your face.’" "Remember that glory will not be found in failing to fall, but in rising from the chaos when you do." "All her life she had been called reckless, all her life she’d been accused of having a death wish, all the while wanting nothing more than to simply live." Synopsis📚: Althea has lived with the knowledge that her life has an experation date. Determined to become a legend before the fates deem fit to end her, Thea will defy prophecy and prejudice to become a warsword legend of Thezmarr. In a land where women are forbidden from weilding steel, the life of a warrior calls to the young woman like no other. Personal Thoughts💭: I loved every second of this book! It was fast paced, intriguing, and the story telling all encompasing. The romance dynamic was deliciously broody and tense, and I was so invested in each interaction the chatacters had. Characters👥️: Althea's was flawed and determined to reach her dream. Her character development just in the first book was great, as you see her go from arrogance to understanding. Wilder was swoon worthy. I loved how he takes on a mentor role, his strength, and the inclusion of his pov was perfection. Enjoyed❤️🔥: I can tell from book one that the world of Thezmarr is going to be an intricate and beautiful world to explore. I love how Scheuerer wrote the flaws and trauma of characters in the story. Throw magic, swordfighting, reapers/wraiths, and prophecy into the mix, you bet I was hooked! Overall❤️: I highly suggest this book for those who are a fan of fast paced, and action packed fantasy romance series. The story was amazing, the characters, including side characters, were beautifully written. Give it a read! I'm on to book two! ["
