"This book had me from the first sentence... Rhya is a faerie halfing destined for death. He is a commander of the guard with no remorse, emotion, or feeling. Before she is to be hung and put to the pyre, he slaughters all of the guards and whisks her away on his horse to lands unknown. Penn is crude, ruthless, and a villain. The journey from where she is taken to the city of Caeldera is full of danger. Everyone wants to capture her. She has no idea what makes her so important until she learns she is the Remnant of Air, and she is one of four Remnants who can restore the balance. Even when the action slows down a bit in the middle, it's important to understand Rhya's feelings as she goes from running for her life to being left alone in a palace with nothing to do. She needs to figure out a way to live a new life in a place that is unknown to her, and she doesn't know she's welcome. This book may be one of my favorite reads of the year at the end of this year! I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, and cannot wait to read more from Julie Johnson. ["

"Half fae Rhya saved from hanging by a masked warrior, cruel at first, leaves iron hand cuffs on that cut her wrists to the bone, & makes her travel on her stomach over the horse for days & days, won't let her sit normally on the horse when she asks, rhya becomes ill from this bad treatment, finally acts concerned, he feeds & takes care of her, he all of a sudden turns nice, asking 'r u ok?' Don't get the personality change, don't feel the connection between h & H, arriving at a castle, he ignors her, leaves on a trip, she's kept locked in her room for days, when he comes back he says u aren't a prisoner, u can go where u like, too little too late, otherwise liked first half interesting plot & characters, plenty of action, then around chapter 20-22 hero is away the story is about her friendship with a pregnant dressmaker, she escapes, prefer her to leave & never come back, go to soren who is supposed to be the villain but kinder than the hero, nearly finished to 75% ["

"Wow. Why isn’t everyone reading & yapping about this book?! It’s incredible, original & gorgeously written. I absolutely loved this fantasy. I love the concept, the magic system, the tension between characters & the narration was outstanding. I actually preferred listening over reading bc the narrator was so talented at every voice. That’s HUGE for me. Honestly, there wasn’t a moment while reading this book that I wasn’t 100% invested. I found myself not reading my other book because I had to know what happened next in this fantasy. The world building is incredible. I loved how we learned about the new world along with Rhya & I loved that she’d grown up fearing what she was. I love that Scythe seems to be reluctantly keeping her alive. His indifference toward her, but also the little things he does to take care of her absolutely drew me into his inner conflict & darkness. I can’t say much about the plot bc I don’t want to spoil anything but just know it’s filled with tension, yearning & chemistry. Every side character is important & fill the world that Rhya is trying to survive. I loved how Rhya’s magic is out of control & the concept of searching for four remnants of magic. I don’t know if the love interest in this book will always be the love interest but trust me when I say I am SO happy that I have book two in my hands because the cliff hanger is epic! "I enjoyed this. FMC Rhya had a sheltered childhood, unaware of the meaning for the birthmark on her chest. Her town is destroyed by the army, her foster father murdered and she is hunted, because she's a halfling, saved from execution by an army commander who is actually a Northlander. As they escape to the Northlands, pursued by the army and other monsters, we experience the world building along with Rhya, as she learns -- slowly -- what her birthmark means, and how to use her power. It's well-written, with interesting side characters, and a potential rival for our MMC, Penn, a haunted man striving to control his magic -- and Rhya. The only miss for me was Penn's treatment of Rhya after he rescued her and they are escaping -- unnecessarily harsh for how important she was to him. Looking forward to the sequel, out in a few weeks. As an aside, the cover of this book and the sequel are absolutely gorgeous. ["
