Clara Graysword is a survivor of Eclipse City’s treacherous underworld, relying on her talent for illegal magic and a quick wit to stay ahead of the law. Her luck finally fractures when she is sentenced to a lifetime in prison for the crime of inking tarot cards—a forbidden practice reserved for the elite. Just as the dungeon doors close, the enigmatic Prince Kaelis, headmaster of the prestigious Arcana Academy, offers her a dangerous lifeline.
Kaelis seeks to reclaim a lost, all-powerful tarot card, and he identifies Clara as the only person capable of helping him steal it. To keep his instrument of chaos close and his motives hidden, Kaelis orchestrates a daring ruse: he smuggles Clara into the academy as both a first-year student and his bride-to-be. Thrust into a high-stakes world of royal intrigue and arcane power, Clara must juggle her secret identity with the looming threat of discovery.
As she navigates the academy’s treacherous social strata, the lines between duty and desire begin to blur. Locked in a volatile partnership with the man she was meant to despise, Clara faces an impossible choice: surrender to the prince’s dangerous ambition or seize the ultimate power for herself.
The Clift’sGood Read, Excited for Book 2!
"I enjoyed this book for the most part. It’s incredibly slow in the beginning and I had to force myself to keep reading. It didn’t really pick up until about 3/4 of the way through. The magic is insanely complex and really hard to keep up with. It was interesting and I did enjoy the magic system, I just wish it was a little easier to understand. I couldn’t tell you what any of the cards did specifically. It’s marketed as a romantic fantasy but the romance didn’t appear until the book was almost over. It’s extremely slow burn enemies to lovers. I did like the growing relationship but I wish we got to see more of it sooner in the book. It’s over 500 pages and wasn’t able to see really any of it until about 450 pages. I understand this is the first book in a trilogy so I’m taking that into account for the slowness of it. When it started to pick up though, I was hooked. I liked it enough that I will be continuing the series. I hope the next book picks up a little faster. The cliffhanger is absolutely heart stopping and I need to know what happens next!😭😅 ["
