Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Deluxe Hardcover Novel) Vol. 1
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou
Mo Ran lives a second chance at life, haunted by the memories of his past as a ruthless emperor and the all-consuming hatred he once held for his master, Chu Wanning. While his previous life was defined by resentment and bloodshed, the present offers a jarring contrast: the Chu Wanning of this timeline is a man of quiet, unwavering sacrifice who consistently shields his student from harm. Mo Ran struggles to reconcile the monster he remembers with the stoic, self-sacrificing teacher standing before him.
As he fights to prevent the catastrophic betrayal that defined his past, Mo Ran is thrust into a dangerous partnership with the very man he once sought to destroy. Together, they must navigate a web of unfolding tragedies to hunt a shadow operative whose reach seems to extend into the darkest corners of Mo Ran’s own fractured soul. The tension between them vibrates with unresolved grief, hidden intentions, and the agonizing friction of a teacher-student bond strained by secrets.
In this high-stakes game of survival, Mo Ran faces an impossible question: can he break the cycle of his own history, or is he destined to be consumed by the very hatred he fears most?
A. K. S.Story continues strong
"The second volume of The Husky and His White Cat Shizun continues exactly where the first volume left things; even the chapter numbering continues. Mo Ran, his fellow disciples Shi Mei and Xue Meng, and their Shizun, Chu Wanning, are in a mortal peril at the bottom of a lake while trying to acquire divine weapons. Their situation isn’t as random an event as they thought. It turns out that a dangerous adversary is targeting Mo Ran; one he had no knowledge of in his previous life. Wherever he and his group go, there the opponent already is. So where did he come from? And is he after Mo Ran’s golden core or is it something more personal? Mo Ran’s difficult relationship with his Shizun takes an unexpected turn. First, Chu Wanning starts having visions of Mo Ran’s past life that involve him, mainly the parts about sexual abuse. And then a poisoning he’s suffered at the bottom of the lake turns him into a six-year-old. Chu Wanning doesn’t want anyone to know, so he pretends to be a new disciple and befriends Mo Ran who takes him as his little brother. Together, they explore their childhood traumas of being abandoned and treated badly. There’s some healing, but also new hurts as neither of them understands love or affection. And it doesn’t quite carry into their adult relationship either—Mo Ran is yet to repent the way he treated Chu Wanning in the past—so the romance doesn’t really evolve. Mo Ran continues to meet people from his past and see them in a new light as the events unfold differently. The biggest shock for him is coming across the woman he ended up marrying in his previous life—and hating. But it may be there’s something odd about Chu Wanning’s past too that is also trying to catch up with him. I think the second volume is even better than the first. Mo Ran keeps growing, even if he lapses a few times; there are some great adventures, and the character relationships evolve. The ending isn’t quite the nail-biting cliff-hanger than in the first volume, but it leaves Mo Ran in a new and difficult position—which he has no idea about. I can’t wait to read the next volume. ["

SnowbrocadeFast paced Wuxia adventure with slow-burn romance!
"In this volume, Mo Ran, the disciple of the cold temperamental Chu Wanning, discovers a conspiracy to steal his spiritual core. His last life he was an evil bloody tyrant who tortured his Shizun because he felt unfairly treated and neglected. Mo Ran is maturing in ways he didn’t in his previous life and is learning compassion and empathy. Now his actions in his previous life horrify him. His Shizun secretly is in love with Mo Ran, but is socially awkward and unable to express his feelings, even approval or positive reinforcement to his disciples. When he is accidentally transformed into a six-year-old child his disciples take him under their wing and Chu Wanning learns how they feel about his coldness. He wants to change and let his disciples know he cares. This story of transformation paired with a slow-burn romance are the main themes of the novel. The characters live in a fascinating cultivation world, populated with ghosts and other supernatural creatures. Shizun leads his disciples in exorcising malevolent spirits in a variety of fascinating adventures. This Wuxia novel is a very good read! ["
