About this book

An instant New York Times and USA Today bestseller! An Indie Next pick! Infused with magic and romance, this sweeping fantasy adventure inspired by the legend of Mulan follows a young woman determined to choose her own destiny—even if that means going against everyone she loves. The special first edition hardcover will include a gorgeous, shimmering jacket with effects, brilliantly illustrated four-color endpapers, striking and detailed-stained edges, and a beautiful foil-stamped case. The Three Kingdoms are at war, but Meilin’s father refuses to answer the imperial draft. Trapped by his opium addiction, he plans to sell Meilin for her dowry. But when Meilin discovers her husband-to-be is another violent, ill-tempered man, she realizes that nothing will change for her unless she takes matters into her own hands. The very next day, she disguises herself as a boy and enlists in her father’s place. In the army, Meilin's relentless hard work brings her recognition, friendship—and a growing closeness with Sky, a prince turned training partner. But has she simply exchanged one prison for another? As her kingdom barrels toward destruction, Meilin begins to have visions of a sea dragon spirit that offers her true power and freedom, but with a deadly price. With the future of the Three Kingdoms hanging in the balance, Meilin will need to decide whom to trust—Sky, who inspires her loyalty and love; the sea dragon spirit, who has his own murky agenda; or an infuriating enemy prince who makes her question everything she once knew—about her kingdom and about her own heart.

Great for Mulan and fantasy fans

"Yes, this has multiple scenes taken straight from Disney's Mulan (my favorite as a child) but it is still a well-detailed and deeper telling of this classic Chinese tale. I am not Chinese so I cannot speak to the cultural accuracy, but I very much enjoyed the ride! Meilin does not have Disney Mulan's happy home life but she does run to escape a marriage match. There is a dragon but he doesn't crack jokes and he has a very different goal than Meilin. The whole story is in first-person POV but through mind magic we get into other characters' heads and motivations. Lots of class and patriarchy commentary. Also on general prejudice against the unknown, which is as old as time. The romance subplot was interesting. I was glad that Meilin questioned Liu Sky and his actions. She doesn't think everything he does is perfect because she has a crush. When our love triangle becomes clear, she has to realize that she may be attracted to hot, bad guys. I vaguely knew this was the start of a series but it became clear at 70% that the story was not gonna wrap up in this book. While I hate cliffhangers (without the next book in hand) I appreciated the author's dedication to a more realistic ending with consequences. An ending for now, at least! Finally, the book does lightly address Meilin having to stop her periods, bind her breasts, and deal with homophobic slurs. All missing from Disney, of course, but important to quickly address in a novel. ["
