A wonderfully done mix of "old" and modern romantasy!

"Imagine a body-positive fantasy romance where Gemma gets whisked away by a magical tarot card to an exciting steampunk world in trouble. Can she save it while figuring out her feelings for her charming ex who seems to have changed? I really enjoyed the world-building and the mystery! I’m a big fan of portal fantasies, and this book delivers on that front. I wish there was even more detail about the magic system and the machines! The suspense of what brought them to life kept me turning the pages. It’s a quick and easy read that touches on surviving a narcissist. I liked this book but it didn’t completely win me over. Overall, it’s a simple, enjoyable read that’s perfect for a good time! ["

2.5 stars, didn't really enjoy this one

"2.5/5 spice (could have been more but I skipped a lot of the spicy scenes, especially the food-assisted scene.) I almost dnf'd at 30% because I absolutely hated Alder (the first love interest), he was so annoying, manipulative and toxic it was pissing me off. However I got sucked into an action scene at the end of Chapter 9 and I was intrigued enough to keep reading. I did finish this book. Gemma was going thru some hard times - lost her job, blew thru her savings and her lease for her apartment was up so she was about to be homeless. So she goes back home for her childhood best friend's wedding and runs into her ex, Adler. Adler is a professional fixer (and a professional narcissist dirtbag) who wants to come in and save Gemma from her terrible life. After way to many drinks and a mysterious tarot card, she agrees to a quickie, and they are transported to the Towerfall realm. This book explores a different couple in a neighboring kingdom to the first book so you could read this as a standalone. Normally, I can tell if its better to read them together or not but this time the world-building and plot was so different that I got confused a few times about the differences between the two books and kingdoms. Honestly, if it wasnt for Lord Lockhart from book 1 I think I would have dnf'd it. There were moments were I was getting so mad at Alder and Gemma or the plot was confusing but then an action scene would happen or the Lord was so sweet and romantic, it hooked me back in. Oh the end was bull! It felt really unbelievable and honestly ruined the growth the main "Lovers" were having up to that point. ["

Fun Romantasy looking forward to the next book in the series!

"Final thoughts: Was this an epic romantasy? No if you are looking for one of those romantasy's with a large amount of world building and explanations on the magic systems and back story on what is going on with everything this one might not be for you. Not much world building or back history on anything including what is going on with the magic. Was the plot super amazing? Also no --> it's a thinner plot but it was entertaining and I enjoyed reading it. I wasn’t looking for an epic literary masterpiece and I wasn’t disappointed, The FMC was irritating at times with how she even seemed to be gaslighting herself into not realizing she had been meeting with 2 different guys (this isn't really a spoiler as it is on the back blurb and evident to everyone but our FMC throughout the book) but she was relatable in the way that she was in a totally new world and overwhelmed while her real life had been crashing as well. It’s understandable that she would cling to the one known element in the new world --> Mr. Rotten (Alder the smarmy ex) Alderic was super sweet and everything that Alder wasn’t and he was building her up and listening to her they had some really sweet moments and if you read the first book you know why he was so cautious with everything too and waited to tell her who he was. Did the plot have some holes and questions? Yes Did I like this anyways? Yes it was a fun read and I enjoyed it even with the flaws. It won’t be for everyone but would recommend to the right audience. Looking forward to the next book! ["
