What Lies Beyond the Veil (Of Flesh & Bone, 1)
Harper L. Woods
Betrayal. He was the deception waiting in the night; the truth I never saw coming. After a lifetime of manipulation, I finally learned the truth. I was his puppet—even if I never saw my strings. Even knowing how deep his betrayal runs, I can’t shake the undeniable connection between Gray and I—the way a single glance from him sets my soul on fire. We are not the same. We’re enemies, poised to battle for the future of the very thing I’d wanted to destroy. With the Covenant gone, the revenge I thought I wanted is no longer my priority. The witches that remain played no role in my aunt’s death, and the only person standing in the way of righting those wrongs is the very man determined to keep me in his bed. But the remaining members of the Coven will never forgive me for the role I played in their demise and subjugation, and the worst part of all is that I can’t even blame them for it. I’d been naïve, believing my own delusions of grandeur when destiny clearly had other plans for me—plans that had been set in motion centuries before my birth. But even that had been a lie, and now it is my duty to do everything in my power to undo it, to protect my Coven from my husband’s hatred—no matter the cost.

"When I reviewed book one I had to be mindful not to give spoilers and that meant I couldn't go on and on about the shocking cliffhanger we were treated to. But now I can. If you haven't read book 1 of this series, stop reading this review and go find book 1. Book 2 is not a standalone. So at the end of book one, our hearts are ripped out as we find out that the Gray we had fallen in love with alongside Willow, was in fact, not only manipulating her the entire time, but wasn't even "Gray". Turned out he was Lucifer Morningstar himself. Trapped in the body of a vessel. The horrific way he treated her made the betrayal that much more devastating. I was shocked, appalled and saddened. The way he did things...so callous and cold. Anyway. This book pics up immediately where book one left off. Willow bleeding out from a stab wound, given by Gray aka Lucifer. And we are along for the ride as she recovers and attempts to navigate a new reality, one where the man she had started falling in love with isn't who she thought he was. A reality where everyone has an agenda, and she can't really trust anyone. A reality, where despite the pain and fear and fury Gray has created within her, he's decided he won't ever let her go. It's a wild ride. Well written, steamy, fun, sad, interesting. The ending was abrupt in a way that left me unsure if Gray and Willow's story was concluded or if there would be a third novel with them living out what looks to he quite the prophecy. What we do know, is there will be a third book in the series centered on two side characters, who I will not name because I'm not big on spoiling things. If this was the end of Gray and Willow's story, then I'm not sure what to say. There were what I felt were loose ends... but at the same time, those loose ends could technically be tied up by other books centering on other characters. 10/10 would recommend this book. ["

"I’ll admit I got this book when I was still early into The Coven (book 1). I thoroughly enjoyed that one and was excited to jump right into the next one but honestly it didn’t deliver quite like I’d hoped. I still enjoyed the read, and the audio. I will say that the audible and Spotify premium audio recordings did not entirely match my hardcover or kindle copies of either book. Book 1 audio is missing 2 whole chapters that are in my printer and ebook copies. Book 2 audio contains a chapter that isn’t in my print or ebook copies, as well as an epilogue that also wasn’t in those copies either. I’m invested in the connection between Willow and Gray so I’m still anticipating the release of The Damned this October. The Cursed was slower than the first book was; most of the excitement was in the last 1/4 of the book. The spice was good, but the plot sort of fell flat for me. Mostly happy ending. I think you could read books 1 & 2 and feel like it was complete, but there is a third coming out soon. These books are gorgeous - will definitely be buying that one, too. ["
