About this book

A USA TODAY BESTSELLER! DELUXE EDITION―featuring beautiful stenciled edges, stylish endpapers, a foil casestamp and a detailed map. The most powerful sorceress in all the world comes face to face with her greatest rival in this enchanting and seductive fantasy romance debut from Jennifer K. Lambert. "Just beautiful. It's beautifully written. Academic, intellectual, poetic… it's everything." ―Katherine Heigl on #booktok The Dread Sorceress Oneira has retired. She’s fought and won endless wars and has finally exiled herself to a remote forest where the mountains meet the beach. But with one last curiosity to satisfy, Oneira makes a reckless trip to the most extensive library in existence: the collection of her most powerful rival, the sorcerer Stearanos. There, she steals a book on rare roses, inadvertently initiating a forbidden correspondence with her once-enemy. Taunting notes and clever retorts reveal a connection neither has found―nor could ever find―in any other. When Stearanos, bound to a vile king, is called to war against the queen she once served, Oneira knows a relationship with him is far too dangerous to pursue despite their mutual desire. And yet, Stearanos is far too tempting to ignore… Exquisitely crafted and bewitchingly lyrical, Never the Roses is like Circe by Madeline Miller meets The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent. “[A] fresh take on enemies to lovers that will have readers swooning. A must-add for any romantasy shelf.” ―Booklist, starred review Expect: - Rivals to lovers - Forbidden love - Slow burn - Starcrossed lovers - Tragic romance - Dark past - Redemption - Unexpected ending

good read

"This book was a decent read. It had an incredibly slow start and I almost dnfd it but it picked up around chapter 4. I loved the turmoil the mic and mmc had. The ending was unexpected. ["

Amazing storytelling

"“You’re like your animals. Powerful, magical, you stay only where you choose. I’m asking you to choose me.” Oneira has bought her freedom after being forced to use her dream magic to win wars for years and now has a self imposed isolation. She feels she has nothing to live for and subconsciously decides to travel the Dream in search of purpose. She didn’t think it would lead to the library of her rival where she steals a book and the two end up conversing through notes. This was a phenomenal bit of writing, such an imaginative world and an immersive whimsical dream sphere. It explores themes of grief, brokenness, isolation, acceptance and forgiveness. The rivals being the only two people who could see and understand each other in a world that pits them against each and uses their own magic against them. At one point she meets someone only known as the Gardener in the Dream who helps her in her search. I thought this was a great metaphor for God and how they showed gentleness and kindness to Oneira in her self condemnation and gave her purpose in her grief. I think it portrayed how in our lowest and darkest moments God is still there and hasn’t given up on us. The romance: Oneira thinks it’s a door now shut for her so seeing her experience those desires and feelings in a profound way was beautifully done. I love a burn the world for her MMC but this story approaches love in a way that doesn’t need declarations like that and is just as powerful. I personally loved that this story was emotional and deep without being triggering for me. Ugly cried at that ending, geez it was so bittersweet. While it was a standalone it was still a bit open ended so I’m hoping the author will revisit these characters at some point. ["
