We get back story for new characters and for the previously established characters. Visits are made to the Fire Court, Earth Court, The White Halls, and the Water Court. Secrets are revealed and we end with even more questions than we started with. So much happens in this book that it is difficult to imagine how it could all possibly be resolved. The one annoying factor is how the powerful central character gets repeatedly dominated by the antagonists in the story by making poor decisions. "I could not put this book down. If there is one thing I love in fantasy books, it’s uncovering secrets. And this book was full of that. Scarlett definitely grew over this book as well, which I loved because I was ready for her to really tap into the bad ass we know she is. While I was frustrated with her for not figuring things out sooner, her growth to get there was worth it. I really enjoyed all the new characters and found family in this book. I love the banter between them all and I especially love the connection that Scarlet and Eliza have. I did almost through my kindle when Sorin did what he did, but again I think it was necessary for the story. And I love him so much. That ending! Will Sorin feel betrayed? What’s going to happen with Scarlett? Does Talwynn know she has a twin flame? How is she going to get out of this? Ahhhh! I must keep going. I can’t wait to find out. ["

Not my favorite book in an overall great series

"Overall rating: 3/5 Spice: 3/5 Narrator: 3/5 Cliffhanger: 5/5 I usually enjoy a book even more on the reread. I did with the first book in this series. This one, not so much. And not because the bones of this, were taken almost completely from A Court of Mist and Fury but because of all the illogical, painfully drawn out relationship drama and the Main Characters, both of who seem to devolve from the first book. Sorin has gotten Scarlett away from the evil man seeking to force her into marriage and gotten her and her ex, the Crown Prince, safely across the border to the Fae lands. Her magic has exploded and she’s furious at him for the secrets he’s kept from her. Misunderstandings are worked through, cleanly and neatly , allowing Scarlett to set about recovering from her trauma, connecting with Sorin’s inner court, and learning about her magic. In order to do this, Sorin makes the brilliant decision not to tell her she’s his twin flame and the longer it takes her to accept the bond the weaker her gets. The first time through, the constant influx of new information about the world and their magic kept me very engaged. This was done at a perfect pace, with lots of fun twists and turns. There was something or someone surprising around every corner. Without the surprise factor, however, we were left with the character development and the romance, which are usually my favorite parts. In this… Sorin keeping the information about the bond long after any logic could hold it, but things really devolved half way through when one big dramatic fight threw every character into something that resembled a bad teenage drama. I’m going to get into some spoilers here…. Something happens that puts Sorin into a really bad mood, so he goes off on his own. Scarlett decides to “help” by barreling through his boundaries and forcing herself into his space. Because he is in a bad mood, Sorin lashes out and says a few things that he clearly doesn’t mean. He is immediately repentant, but Scarlett gets so upset that she decides (in her first of many epic shows of hypocrisy) to isolate herself for days and sulks for weeks. Everyone takes Scarlett’s side despite the fact that she spends the rest of the book acting like the petulant teenager she is and Sorin turns into a groveling puppy. We also have Callan, the mortal prince’s, pov. He spends the entire book pining for Scarlett. Having now read all the books I can appreciate that the author is laying the ground work for some spectacular character development in later books, but it is tedious in this book. Cautions: Many of these characters have dark and disturbing back stories that we get to hear. There are several spicy scenes between consenting adults (even if I sometimes question if Scarlett should be considered one). Despite all this, I’m still going to recommend this series, which means you have to get through this book. Why? The lore, the world building, and the overall plot are consistently great. Despite its similarities to other works, it will keep you guessing. But most of all, it gets better. Scarlett and Sorin do work out their crap and start acting like a bad-ass magical couple. Other characters take over more and more of the books. The last two books are very much ensemble and there are some spectacular characters arcs coming. But these books are long and I can understand if some of you don’t want to wade through the messy parts to get there. ["
