"The Poison Daughter is, without question, one of the best romantasy standalones I have ever read and I don't say that lightly. Masterson constructs this story in layers, and I mean layers. Every time I thought I was finally getting an answer, the narrative peeled back to reveal yet another question lurking beneath. I'm someone who almost always has theories running in the background as I read, picking up threads, anticipating reveals, and this book completely dismantled that habit. The mystery woven throughout is so expertly crafted that I had zero ability to predict where anything was heading. Genuinely, refreshingly, delightfully stumped the entire time. Can we also talk about how good it is to read about characters in their 30s? Harlow and Henry aren't wide-eyed newcomers stumbling into their feelings. They are emotionally complex, carrying real damage, and they've turned that trauma into something fierce and powerful. They're both undeniably badass in a way that only comes from people who've been through it and chose to keep moving forward. And the banter. Chef's kiss. Henry and Harlow have the kind of electric, witty dynamic that makes you slow down just to savor the dialogue. It never feels forced and it crackles because these two characters are so well developed that every exchange feels completely natural. "Wow! I had no idea what to expect with this book, as I jumped on the bandwagon to read it. Harlow uses her poison kiss to kill men who are abusive. She is the ideal vigilante. If you want the perfect dark fantasy romance standalone, this is your book! Harlow's family is at the top of the magic wealth food chain. Although, they don't know everything about her skills. They also use her as a pawn in their politics. I love her backbone! Secrets are favored and manipulation runs rampant the entire book. Watch your back! Whew, the door to the spice is WIDE open! It is definitely not closed! While the world building can feel a little slow at times, keep pushing through. You will crave more Harlow and Henry and want to dive deeper into their story. The book could benefit from being condensed. I really enjoyed the playful back and forth between Harlow and Henry. The cat and mouse dynamic kept things interesting, and I found it fun to piece together their strategies as they tried to outsmart and outmanipulate each other. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and found myself completely absorbed in it. Please check the triggers. I will definitely be picking up another book by Sheila! "You're never alone in your pain." We have an interesting magic system, lots of family secrets & betrayal, political intrigue, a good plot and perfect true enemies to lovers with great banter that had me laughing and swooning both. I love a strong FMC and Harlow is a baddy! I love her prickly nature but she has to be that way given how she was raised. Henry was a good MMC too. He’s broody, quiet and is an observer. "I love stories where the author is pretty clearly giving voice to some personally-held rage. The results aren’t always good, per se, but they’re usually enthralling in a way that other, more deliberately-constructed books can’t be. If you’ll permit me an incredibly minor spoiler, the female lead is a serial killer who exclusively targets abusive men. Some characters express surprise at learning this information. Not one person ever suggests that what she’s doing is wrong. So, it’s that kind of book. It’s a lot more, though. There’s an attention to detail in the world building and the character relationships that I really appreciated. Nuance is -everywhere-, and the author goes especially far out of her way to avoid simplifying -anything- down to a binary good/bad judgment. It’s always mixed, and messy, and complicated, because the kinds of problems that create heinously awful people and societies in the real world are complicated and messy, and can’t just be punched in the face by someone with a rugged jaw and bad-boy energy. Speaking of male romantic leads, though, this has -also- got some excellent dark romance vibes. The guy telling the girl not to run away from him because he likes to hunt is an absolute cliche at this point, but Henry is the first character I’ve read in a hot minute who I actually believed when it was his turn to get all growly and masculine. He and Harper have a delightful dynamic where both of them seem to think they’re playing a game of chicken that they refuse to lose, and, oh my God, you beautiful dorks, you are obviously -not-. So, yeah. This book took me by surprise. It’s heavy, it’s way realer than you might want in your escapism, and it can sometimes -hurt- to read. But also, oh, man, this one hit good for me. ["

"This book hit me hard. I absolutely loved how strong Harlow comes across, how feisty she is—but you know she’s shielding a whole bunch of hurt underneath. The strength of women knows no bounds. A good enemies-to-lovers, with some reluctant lust and possessiveness in the middle. Bring some popcorn for the spicy scenes. And be sure to bring enough for everyone (IYKYK). Note to self- do NOT recommend this one to my mother. The MMC, Henry is SO complimentary to Harlow. From the very first time they interact he matches Harlow’s energy without belittling her, or diminishing her own place in the world as why she is who she is. Even when he hates her, and rightfully so, he gives her room to feel, and speak, and be. This story is not about miscommunication. It’s about learning to trust someone with the tender parts of yourself when the world has only given you reasons not to. I loved the exploration of sibling love and responsibility in this book. The special kind of love that is born between two people who spend all their formative years together under one roof — whether that roof is protecting or hiding what’s inside. There are some twists that are predictable and some that aren’t. But, they curate a thoughtful and engaging plot. I cried quite a bit in the last 25%. ["
