Every time you think you know what’s going to happen, guess again. I don’t know how I’m supposed to wait for book 3. I read hundreds of books a year, and it has been a loooong time since I’ve read anything this good. It’s engaging and meaningful, and although the storyline is completely different, the writing and complexity remind me a little of the Hunger Games. "3.5 Stars I don't know if I will say it was better than the first book but the last 80% is what raised the rating. Again, I saw the main bad characters coming but the way how it was revealed was still thrilling! The main problem I had with this book was the writing techniques used. Not the writing style because that is way better than some of these popular romantacy novels that keep getting recommended. But I felt like I was being buried by words. Kenna will take up two pages describing one hallway and then turn the corner and take another two pages describing that part of the hallway. It was so unnecessary. It's like trying to write an essay in highschool and you needed to make it 1,000 words. Too many useless details that could have been dedicated to other components of the plot. I feel like the author was stuck in world building mode she didn't want to write about anything else. This truly hurt the pacing. And there were plot points missing that I wish were added. I know Kenna was in a whole new world in the Blood House with new responsibilities but she didn't try to study about her powers or use them at the appropriate times. I was like "girl! What are you doing?! Lock in already!" This book literally picked off from where we left off in the first book. And this sequel occurred within 3 weeks I believe. Not much time to be considered a slow burn. Not much time between the two MMCs if you think about it. 🤷🏾‍♀️ I'm not judging though. 👀😅 Again, there were also minor plot inconsistencies. Like the character was clearly spit on and described the flecks on their dress and then in the next paragraph the dress is described as pristine. Keep 👏🏾 the story 👏🏾 consistent 👏🏾! My biggest pet peeve, as a reader. The level of intensity traveled throughout this sequel. Not as triggering as the first book but the consequences that some of the characters had to live with was so severe. I didn't feel that dark cloud letting up either. The first book had some parts of relief but this one... well, it was a constant hammering. Most of it was the FMCs constant musings of every failure or anticipated failure over and over again. I don't even want to imagine what's going to happen in the next book. From the cliffhanger, it's not going to be good for the FMC. The ending of this book made want to read the next one. I hope when the next book comes out it will actually be good from beginning to end. No more need for world building now. We are in it. Let's spend more time moving the plot forward throughout the ENTIRE novel. ["
