Their first encounter leaves her a mix of furious and awestruck. His presence is dark, commanding, mafia-coded… and terrifyingly magnetic. When she strikes a bargain with him, the story shifts into something even more intense. And then, boom, the Otherworld comes into play. Fae bargains, twisted magic, and a Fae Prince with secrets stacked on secrets. I loved the way the Fae elements blended into the gritty, criminal backdrop. I still can’t piece everything together (in a good way), and the mystery just keeps unraveling. The chemistry between Lachlan and Cate? Off. The. Charts. Hot. They’re both stubborn, both protective, both fighting this intense pull. It’s enemies-to-lovers with a slow burn that finally ignites in the best way. His dark, dominant, protective energy is absolute perfection. The ending? Had me in a chokehold. Once the story really took off, I couldn’t put it down. Fae bargains, fated mates, impossible choices—this book is packed with morally gray characters, political court intrigue, dangerous magic, and a heroine who never stops fighting. Cate and Lachlan are addictive together, and every layer of this world made me want more. I’m absolutely continuing this series—no question. ["

UGH, the FMC is ANNOYING.

"I went back and forth between the Kindle version of this book and the audio version of this book on Audible and I'm not sure which one I prefer, honestly. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– This book follows our FMC, Cate, as she works as a nurse in Gage Memorial Hospital, which is owned by the Gage family of New Orleans. She has heard all of the rumors surrounding the Gage family and knows to stay away from them. This all changes when she finds that her brother, Channing, is tied up with the Gage family. She makes a bargain with Lachlan to give him her nights in exchange for keeping her brother safe without realizing the implications it would have on her life, moving forward. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– OMG, Cate drove me nuts! I wanted to hit her over the head for most of this book, to be completely honest. I was so excited to finally be done with the book just so I wouldn't have to listen to Cate's insufferable back and forth. She's the whole reason I lowered my rating from last year from 5 stars to 3 stars. I normally am not petty like this but I just can't look past her pithy banter with everyone long enough to have a more objective look at this book for a better rating. That's not to say I won't be reading the sequel because I'll be reading that one as well after I tone down my currently reading a tab a bit more. I had started reading this one again just so I can remember what happened before moving on to the sequel. I think the only saving grace for this book is Lachlan and his family. I feel the Gage family got a bad rep for all the wrong reasons, though I can understand how and where the rumors started. I'll always believe that rumors like that have some basis of truth in them and this isn't an exception. I was also glad to see that this series has ties to Geneva's "Filthy Rich Vampires" series, though I wasn't surprised in the least. I don't think I caught the mention the first time I read this book but I'm glad I was paying enough attention during this read-through to catch it. I would say you should read this book just because I'm hoping this series will be as good as I believe her "Filthy Rich Vampire" series is. I'm biased for that very reason. lol I hope the sequel is just as captivating, though I'm not holding my breath. We'll see. ["

Mafia fae in NOLA with a great anti-hero

"I have to say that I really liked this book. I love to read morally grey MMCs and Lachlan was perfect -- he was the right mix of dastardliness and charm and a very interesting anti-hero who resides in that dark place where characters like him thrive. Vacillating between secretiveness and ruthlessness, desire and hate, we watch his transformation as he begins to redeem himself. His motives are clear by the end of this first volume -- and his ends certainly justify his means. Two enthusiastic thumbs up. Unfortunately, I just couldn't like the MFC. She was supposed to be likably abrasive and the reader is supposed to be cheering for her as she triumphs over her life but the details on her former life are not there. We eventually find out some things and that her background is awful but it was a bit too little too late for us to care greatly about her. I found myself thinking, "Well that's bad but I wish I'd known sooner." She should have come off as plucky and brave but instead came off as inflexible and arrogant, and as a result her inability to understand what is really going on or read between the lines becomes annoying. It is not until the end that she redeems herself and we start liking her more. The descriptions of the Mafia fae court and families are super -- other writers have tried to bring a shadow world in NOLA to life but have not succeeded the way this author has. The drug trade, the violence and all the nasty things that "live in the shadows" really came alive and it made this book into a page turner as the reader wonders what on earth is going on. The descriptions and explanations could have gone farther -- I feel as if some things were edited out that probably should have been left in as there are a few choppy bits but it was a very good read and I've already pre-ordered the next one in the series. NB: I hope the author expands a bit more into this fae universe -- it is a very interesting premise and has a lot of potential. I just hope that she doesn't tinker too much with Lachlan because his morally grey ruthlessness is what makes him such a great character! He's not necessarily a nice guy (brutal necessity can wipe out "nice" in a flash) but he is certainly worthy of our attention and understanding! ["
