About this book

Elora lives in the shadow of the Waywards, a grim fortress designed to contain the horrors of the Dark Natured. Serving a life sentence for a crime she did not commit, she adheres to a strict code of silence to survive under the oppressive gaze of the seven Witchlords. These powerful wardens act as both keepers of order and brutal jailers, ensuring the boundary between the condemned and the outside world remains impenetrable.

Her fragile existence shatters when she crosses paths with an enigmatic Witchlord whose presence defies the rigid hierarchy of their world. As Elora is pulled into a dangerous orbit around him, she discovers that the monsters lurking behind the obsidian walls are not solely those locked away. The lines between captor and prisoner blur, revealing a volatile connection built on secrets, forbidden power, and a mutual desperation to endure.

In a realm where morality is as dark and twisted as the magic that governs it, Elora must decide if her newfound ally is her salvation or the ultimate architect of her destruction. Amidst the suffocating atmosphere of the Waywards, a dark romance ignites, threatening to consume everything they have both fought to protect.

I really wanted to love this

"I really wanted to love this. There was some unique world building and I think there’s a lot of potential for this series. Keeping in mind that this is the authors first book, I think it was really good. No plot holes come to mind, the writing itself wasn’t bad. The story was engaging enough that I read this book pretty quickly. However, the main character is so annoying. Honestly, most of the characters are. These are all adults and they act like middle schoolers. They’re all impulsive and irrational and childish in behavior and thought. The main character was mature seeming in the beginning and likable, and then she all of a sudden loses any kind of common sense and street smarts, and she throws tantrums every other page. And personally, I HATE when the main character is somehow desired by all characters in the book? Just about every man introduced wants to be with her and it kinda kills the vibe for me, and the whole thing kind reads as a young adult book, not a dark fantasy written for adults. There are things I enjoyed about the book and I’ll read the second one when it comes out in hopes that it gets better. I think that all the critiques I had can be easily fixed going forward, and I think with growth from the writer as she continues to improve and grow as an author, this series and any future books will be great.
