I loooooved that this story started literally the minute that the first book ended. I would definitely recommend reading them back to back or doing a reread of some or all of the first book before starting this one! Freya continues to have all of her sassy, badass traits. I appreciate that we still see character growth from her as the story continues. She does a much better job in this book of working to understand those around her, their plans and backgrounds, and using all of the information she gathers to her advantage. I found myself worried at the beginning that Freya would be naive still, but I feel like she came into her own throughout this second book! Bjorn is still a hottie obsessed with Freya. I’m still obsessed with him and literally all of his lines. The banter between him and Freya (and other characters) is incredible! Even amidst all of the drama, the fighting, the intentional miscommunications and deceptions, the writing is still so FUN. There are still moments where you’ll find yourself smiling and laughing, which I think is really great in a book with heavier themes. Also, I simply MUST mention that the vocabulary in this series is unmatched. I love all of the old school vocabulary and the eloquence of the characters’ speaking styles. There were a LOT of secondary and tertiary story lines to follow. Some of these were great; others were a bit confusing. Overall, I thought that Jensen did a good job of giving readers more insight into the world, the magic system, and left an opportunity to maybe eventually write more stories with these characters or just in this world. Rich Mythology, Surprising Twist—but Lacks Book One’s Spark

"This is the second and final book in the Saga of the Unfated duology. I loved the first book—truly. It hooked me with its sharp banter, slow-burn romance, and emotional depth. But unfortunately, book two didn’t quite live up to its predecessor. The first half dragged for me. The witty, electric banter between Freya and Bjorn—the kind that made us fall in love with them in book one—was noticeably absent this time around. Instead, we got a whole lot of Freya’s martyr complex, which was honestly exhausting. Plot-wise, things moved at a snail’s pace early on. While I appreciated the added depth for some of the side characters, I really missed the romantic tension between the main couple. Their connection felt pushed to the background, which was a letdown considering how central it was to book one. Now for the things I loved: the Norse mythology elements in this book were phenomenal. I learned so much more about the gods, their lore, and the larger world. That part of the book completely delivered. And the twist? It came out of left field in the best way possible. There’s no way anyone could have seen it coming—flabbers were gasted. That twist, along with a stronger second half, redeemed a lot of the book for me. The ending was good—not great. It wrapped things up, but didn’t leave me with the same breathless feeling I had at the end of book one. I can't quite put my finger on it, but overall, this installment felt a bit lackluster. Still, if you're here for Norse mythology and emotional stakes, it's worth finishing the duology. Just manage your expectations going in. ["

"⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars A Curse Carved in Bone started off feeling a bit frazzled, and I struggled to find my rhythm in the opening chapters. The pacing was uneven at first, which left me a little disconnected. But then enter THAT plot twist. It was epic in every sense of the word. From there, the story picked up speed and carried me straight into nail-biting battles that had me panicking, flipping pages like my life depended on it. While I loved the intensity, I couldn’t help but feel let down by the resolution of the villain (no spoilers, but if you know, you know). It felt anticlimactic compared to the buildup, and I also wish there had been more detail about the cabal and their ultimate fate. On top of that, Bjorn, my absolute favorite badass from book one, felt watered down in this installment. I missed his fierceness and energy that made him shine previously. Even with these drawbacks, I was satisfied with how much of the story wrapped up, and the major twists elevated everything. It’s not a flawless sequel, but it left me invested enough to keep following this world and these characters. ["
